Theology Lesson FOR KIDS #4:

God is God With Us

Verse to Consider: Isaiah 57:15

Last week we focused on God is God APART from us.  God is NOT dependent on anything!  He isn't needy like us, He doesn't need air to breath or food to eat.  He is all-sufficient, all-knowing, all-powerful, all-wise!  God IS the definition of GREATNESS!  And although He doesn't need anything, especially us sinners, He is so good that He chooses to BE WITH US!!!!!!  We cannot give to God anything that He needs, because He is complete, YET He gives to us ALL that we need!  We serve a great God!  Let's kick off this week with a jam packed theological verse that shows God in both ways, APART from us and WITH us.

"For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite." Isaiah 57:15

This week's lesson is a simple break down of this great verse, see below!

God APART from us:
"...the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity...“I dwell in the high and holy place..."

God WITH us:
"I dwell...also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit..."

WHY is God WITH us:
"to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite."

Synonym for lowly: humble
Synonyms for Contrite:  remorseful, repentant, regretful, sorry, apologetic, ashamed

I would encourage you after completing lesson three and four to then share the gospel with your child!  See this related post, click HERE

"God showed His love for us in that
while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8

"(God's Love) is bottomlessly selfless, by very definition;
it has everything to give and nothing to receive." C.S Lewis

Specific Ideas for Teaching Lesson Four to Children:
  • Draw it out!  One way I like to help my memory is through drawing!  Take Isaiah 57:15 and draw pictures to represent the truths this verse is sharing.
  • Understanding words!  Above I found the synonyms for the words lowly and contrite.  Help your child understand these words, give examples what it means to be humble and remorseful.
  • Read Isaiah 57:15 in different versions of the bible ESV, NIV, KJV, etc.
  • I remember a break through experience I had as a youth.  I considered the thought that God's love for me was deeper, wider, and stronger then my own mother's love for me.  My mom was the "#1 MOM" kind-of mom (EVERY MOMENT of EVERY DAY) so considering this truth helped me start to grasp the love of God!  This may sound simple but even sharing this simple truth with your child may help them start to understand the love God has for them.
More General Ideas for Teaching Theology to Children...
  • Don't be afraid to challenge your child to THINK!  In a world where children have many thoughtless and effortless tasks (video games, TV, and computer time) challenge your child to THINK through great truths of the gospel!
  • Take your time to soak up truth!  Don't rush through a lesson, allow time, opportunities, and study to help resonate a specific truth within them (and us!!).
  • Begin an individual journal or family journal about the theological truths learned, review it regularly.
  • Pray that the Lord would give you wisdom and understanding as you seek to honor Him in the teaching and training of your children.
  • Pray that God would open the eyes of your child's HEART that they would EMBRACE the gospel not just KNOW the content intellectually (see this related post).
  • Talk about these truths DAILY and when teachable moments present themselves take advantage of them!
